Abby holding a gun

The Last of Us Season 2: Episode 7 Recap

The finale is upon us. The hunt for Abby continues. Will our protagonists make it out alive or is there something else in store for them.

After an episode full of flashbacks last week, we pick up where we left of, with Ellie arriving at the theatre. But first we see Jesse and Dina dealing with the aftermath of the arrow to the knee. Dina’s choice of words is questioned by Jesse ‘I can’t die’, as well as her refusal of alcohol, Jesse realises something is afoot.

Ellie arrives and goes to check on the recovering Dina. She opens up about Joel and what he did back in Salt Lake City. Dina is visibly disappointed in Ellie’s reason for revenge and decides they need to go home.

Seattle Day 3

The graphics on screen make us aware that it is day number 3 within Seattle. Jesse and Ellie pack up and leave to find Tommy so they can leave the war-torn city. Jesse confronts Ellie about Dina’s strange behaviour, guessing that she is pregnant. He confidently says that since he is going to be a father, he cannot die as well – perhaps foreshadowing the future.

They are interrupted by soldier gunfire with it being revealed the soldiers were chasing and capturing a young member of the Seraphites, or Scars. Ellie wants to intervene, Jesse holds her back.

We briefly join the army base, with Isaac questioning where Abby and her crew are since they have all gone missing. He reveals he expects to die and that Abby will be the new leader of the resistance.

Ellie and Jesse arrive at the base to find Tommy is nowhere to be seen. They hold off in the bookstore, with Jesse revealing he thought about leaving Jackson with a girl. He says he loved her but couldn’t abandon the people of Jackson.

The two are interrupted by radio chatter of a unknown sniper on a nearby roof, assumed to be Tommy. Ellie spots a pier home to a Ferris wheel and the aquarium – hinting at the last words Nora revealed about Abby’s whereabouts.

Jesse wants to help Tommy, Ellie wants to find Abby. The two have a heated argument about community, selfishness and loyalty, with Ellie saying her community was Joel and now he’s gone. They split up to go on their separate missions.

Row, Row, Row Your Boat

Ellie arrives at the seafront, eyeing up a boat to take over to the aquarium. She spots two soldiers carrying supplies, just before taking aim and firing, dozens of boats with soldiers appear on the water. The two hop aboard ready to head to the battle with the Scars.

With the coast clear, Ellie jumps aboard a boat and begins heading towards the aquarium. The rough seas, partnered with the dark and stormy sky, lead to Ellie’s boat capsizing.

She awakes on the shore, only to find a young Scar spying on her. A brief whistle later and she is captured. The child shows no mercy, indicating to their mother that Ellie be hung and her stomach sliced. As she begins to be lifted up in the noose, she is saved by a distress call from the nearby village. The Scars flee and Ellie is left wounded but alive.

A Day at the Aquarium

Ellie arrives at the aquarium, rain still pouring, storm still brewing, literally and metaphorically. She works her way through the darkness of the aquarium, following recently wet footsteps. Abby’s crew have been hiding out in the aquarium, and Ellie overhears them talking about the plan.

Two members, Owen and Mel, and held at gunpoint by Ellie, with her one request being to point out where Abby is. If they do that, she won’t hurt them.

Owen reluctantly agrees to point out Abby’s whereabouts but instead reaches for a gun. Ellie fires, hitting Owen in the neck, killing him instantly. Mel turns to see a bullet dent in the cabinet behind her, revealing the bullet also went through her.

Mel falls to the floor, showing her very pregnant belly. She pleads with Ellie to cut her open and save the baby, however Ellie is panicked and unsure what to do. Both Mel and the baby die, leaving Ellie traumatised.

Jesse and Tommy arrive to the aftermath and agree they need to leave Seattle.

The trio arrive back at the theatre, Ellie in shock of what she had done. Tommy suggests that Owen and Mel chose their own fate, it was them or her. Jesse and Ellie are left alone, confronting their confusing relationship. The two make up but are interrupted by a struggle in the room next door.

They spring to their feet and charge through the door, Jesse instantaneously dies with two bullets to the chest, it’s Abby. She holds Tommy at gunpoint, urging Ellie to show her face. Ellie surrenders and reveals she killed Abby’s friends – not because she wanted to, but because she had to.

Abby recognises Ellie and says ‘I let you live, and you wasted it’. She points the gun to Ellie who pleads for a split second before a gunshot is heard and the screen goes black.

We awake with Abby in a nearby stadium, overlooking the huge army base on the field. The screen graphics appear – Seattle: Day 1 – the season ends.

Conclusion

The second season of The Last of Us finishes hinting at following Abby’s story for season 3. And with the series recently being renewed by HBO, this is definitely on the horizon.

The audience are left on a cliffhanger, are Ellie, Tommy and Dina alive? What happened at the theatre? And why are we know following Abby’s story? Now, if you have played the game, you will know what happens. But for those who haven’t, I’ll let you keep asking.

The big question however, will the third season reflect the game, or will they go a different route with the story – we will have to wait and see in a few years time!
